Ngorongoro lies between Lake Manyara, Arusha and the Serengeti. At the heart of this huge and diverse conservation area (8,288 sq km) lays the famous Ngorongoro crater. Once a young volcano, it collapsed around two million years ago leaving a perfect caldera around 20kms across and one km deep - the largest in the world. Viewing the fantastic panorama at the craters edge is where you start your descent through the thickly wooded rim, to the crater floor. Once on the crater floor you can explore the prominent soda lake (Magadi) and enjoy close encounters with some to the 30,000 large mammals. This amazing ecosystem supports and abundance of plains game including lion, leopard, rhino, hippo, gazelle, eland, hyena, waterbuck and buffalo.
