Routes
Machame - camping
Marangu - huts

Itinerary

This is an example iterary for the Marangu route (huts).

Day 1: Arusha/Moshi - Hibo - Mandara Hut
Depart from either Arusha or Moshi, heading for a village called Himo, situated about 40km east of Moshi where you will meet your guide and porter team. Once everyone is organised and equipment is checked we head to the start point, Marangu Gate, which is at approximately 1900m. At the gate we collect our park tickets and then begin the 4-5 hour walk through forest towards Mandara Hut which is at approximately 2700m. The hut is a 2 hour return walk to the Maundi crater, where you can get good views of Kilimanjaro’s main peaks. Return to huts for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut
Awake for breakfast we start the steep climb through forest and then giant heather before passing across moorlands on the southern slopes of Mawenzi. The ascent is approximately 1000m and the day finishes at Horombo Hut (3720m). Today’s walk will be around six hours and roughly 12km. Here you will rest, have dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Horombo Hut - Kibo Hut
Wake for breakfast, start the 1000m ascent to Kibo Hut (4300m). On the way you will pass through the valley behind Horombo Hut and onto the saddle. This area is quite wide and flat compared to the rest averaging around 4200m. You will pass the last water point and proceed to Kibo for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Kibo Hut
It is at Kibo Hut (4300m) that you will have an acclimatisation day. We build this into the programme at this point to maximise your chances of reaching the summit. There are a number of acclimatisation walks that can be done on this day or you can simply relax preparing for your summit tomorrow morning and a long, tough day. Return to hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Kibo Hut - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Hut
After a day resting you will be ready to start very early for a big day of trekking. Today is a long day and can take around 12-15 hours, starting with an ascent of around 1200m, followed by a descent of 2200m to the next nights hut. At around midnight , you will set off from the hut for the tough climb to the Uhuru Peak (4895m). Today will not be easy and it is estimated only 40% of trekkers reach the summit – but the rewards will be well worth the effort. If you make the summit, weather permitting, you may have exhilarating views across Tanzania and into Kenya and possibly catch a glimpse of Kenya’s highest mountain Mt Kenya. On arrival to the highest point in Africa, Uhuru peak (4895m) you will have around 20 minutes to take photos and catch your breath. Then we start the descent to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest, dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Horombo Hut - Hibo - Moshi/Arusha
Today is the last day and we spend it descending to Marangu Gate, back through some of the fantastic scenery passed on the way up. On arrival to Himo we take transport to either Moshi or Arusha for overnight and recovery.

Included
Transport to/from Moshi, guide, porters, all entry fees, meals during trek, accommodation in basic huts.

Not included
Personal insurance, items of a personal nature.

Don’t forget to bring
Sunhat, sunscreen, warm clothes/layers, warm hat, gloves, sleeping bag (suitable for temperatures below -5), water purifying tablets, hiking boots (worn in), walking poles (optional), waterproof clothing, headtorch, camera and binoculars. *Some of these items can be hired/bought locally.

As there is literally nothing on the mountain, all supplies must be carried by porters. Please do not bring more personal belongings that you need. As a guide one or two sets of clothes for day, and a clean set for night, plus thermals, should be ok.

We ask guests not to pack more than 15 kilograms per person/ backpack and any excess luggage can be stored for free at our office in Nairobi or with our associates in Arusha.

Cautions
Altitude sickness is a real danger for any climber. If you feel sick or develop a headache during any part of the trek, inform your guide immediately. And remember, for your safety you may have to descend even if you seem not far from the summit.

Also take good care against the sun. Your skin's sensitivity at altitude is greatly increased, particularly if you are taking some antimalarial tablets.

A summit trek may not be suitable for children under 10, but ultimately this is at the discretion of the parents and the guide.
