3 Day Lake Nakuru, Hell's Gate & Lake Naivasha

Destinations: Crater Lake Conservancy, Lake Nakuru National Park, Hell's Gate National Park, Lake Naivasha
Highlights: Cycling in Hell's Gate, trekking in lower gorge, spotting endanged species, boatride.

Day 1: Nairobi - Lake Nakuru
Depart Nairobi and head North towards the Rift Valley town of Nakuru. On route you will stop for views across the Great Rift Valley, Mt Longonot and Lake Naivasha. With a picnic lunch, you will enter Lake Nakuru National Reserve, which is famous for the thousands of flamingo that inhabit the shores of the lake. In recent times, the water level of the lake has fluctuated greatly and this has affected the numbers of resident flamingos. But perhaps most importantly, this fully-fenced reserve was established as a rhino sanctuary, and black and white rhino are frequently seen on game drives - along with buffalo, lion, giraffe, waterbuck, and the elusive leopard. Late afternoon, proceed to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Lake Nakuru – Elsamere – Crater Lake Conservancy – Lake Naivasha
After breakfast, you depart Nakuru, heading south, pass through Naivasha town and drive around the southern end of the lake, past the flower farms to Elsamere. Elsamere is home to the late Joy and George Adamson, of Born Free fame. This is now a conservation centre and museum where you will enjoy an hour-long boat ride on Lake Naivasha, before a delicious lunch in their beautiful gardens. You can look out for some of the hundreds of bird species as well as the hippos (which you may hear at camp tonight!). During lunch you may even have the company of black and white colobus monkeys and many different species of birds. After lunch you proceed to the Crater Lake Conservancy where you can walk up to the rim of the beautiful volcanic crater for views down to the emerald-green crater lake. Flamingo populations have boomed here recently, having migrated from Lake Nakuru. With your guide you can walk through the conservancy area trekking after plains animals including giraffe, eland and gazelle –while admiring the various species of birds and plants. Depart for your accommodation for dinner and overnight.
